The world's first mass-produced car with a steel body, the Golf Mk V, has doors assembled by a modular system, so that in case of damage only the outer shell has to be exchanged rather than the whole door, saving time and money. 70 metres of laser-welded seams increase the rigidity of the car body. The safety chassis with high-developed strut suspension guarantees sportiness combined with improved driving comfort. With a new dynamic design, the fifth Golf generation rolls off the assembly line in Wolfsburg, Brussels and Zwickau. As the first worldwide, mass-produced car with a steel body, the Golf Mk V has doors assembled by modular system, so that in case of damage not the entire door but only the outer shell has to be exchanged - saving time and money. The Golf Mk V is the biggest step forward so far in the evolution of the model, both visually and technically. A wide choice of innovative engines, featuring the latest FSI petrol and unit injector TDI diesel powerplants, is available. They drive through a six-speed gearbox - with a direct shift gearbox (DSG) following later - and all comply with Euro 4 emissions standards. The new Golf makes its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show

Golf Mk V

09 Sep 2003

On 9th September 2003, the new Golf - the fifth generation of Volkswagen's best-selling model - was to raise the bar in its class for technology, safety and dynamics. Compared with the Golf IV, there is a greater visual distinction in profile between three- and five-door models. With a 'kicked-up' rear side window, the three-door design is intended to convey a more sporty and dynamic message. The interior built upon the high standards set by its predecessor, with soft-feel slush-moulded plastics; high-quality switches; subtle use of chrome; fabric-covered A-pillars; plus blue instrument backlighting with red needles, a signature of the Golf IV. The latest Golf also set new standards by introducing 2Zone climate control and 4-way lumbar support within the line-up. In addition, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) six airbags, AB; and five head restraints (including active head restraints for the front seats) were standard throughout the range.

A new 2.0-litre T-FSI engine linked to a six-speed gearbox and standard Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) are linked to a new chassis, equipped with MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link configuration at the rear. The vehicle is 15mm lower than the standard Golf, on new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. Visual cues are taken from the original GTI with the return of the tartan interior and the red surround, to the grille element - even the GTI typeface used on the badge echoes that of the original.

The commissioning of two visualisation centres at the Wolfsburg plant cuts the cost and time expenditure for vehicle development thanks to new 3D technology developed at Saarbrücken University. Real-time 'Ray Tracing' allows the creation of 3D life-sized vehicles on a special projection screen. Engineers can get a realistic and detailed impression of a planned vehicle in the early stages of development, for example, analysing curves, paint jobs or interiors on these virtual models just the same as on a real vehicle, correcting differences and improving assembly steps. At a later stage in the project it will be possible to go for a virtual drive through the city and the countryside.

The Volkswagen Touareg confirmed its off-road prowess once again by setting a new world altitude record for a motor vehicle of 6,080 metres. This achievement, undertaken in a standard-engined Touareg 3.2-litre V6, is officially recognised by the Guinness World Records' Book. In Chile, battling against icy winds and a lack of oxygen, the Touareg expedition team fought its way through the lunar landscape of the Ojos del Salado, the world's highest volcano, to achieve the record. An altimeter and GPS system displayed the result of 6,080 metres. This is the highest point on the surface of the Earth that a vehicle can reach and safely return from. The Touareg has therefore proven its abilities in extreme conditions and surpassed the performance of all other off-road vehicles.

The award-winning TSI technology offers great performance with fuel economy and low emissions. TSI is a pioneering technology for petrol engines. At the heart of the TSI is a smaller engine. It is more efficient as there is less power loss resulting from friction. It's also lighter, so the engine has less weight to shift in the car. Direct petrol injection is combined with a turbocharger or charge compression with a turbo and a supercharger working in tandem. This enhances the engine's combustion efficiency so the TSI engine power output is much higher than that of conventional, naturally aspirated engines. TSI engines are designed to deliver maximum torque from which is good for driving and fuel economy.

Volkswagen is back in first place in Europe. Measured by the number of new vehicle registrations, the brand has regained first place in 2005. "Volkswagen is a powerful brand. We are now harvesting the rewards of our model offensive", claimed Dr Wolfgang Bernhard, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand in Wolfsburg. "Our models are exciting customers across Europe". Between January and November, the European Automobile Association (ACEA) noted 1.416 million new vehicle registrations for the Volkswagen brand in Europe. The most successful model in Europe is the Volkswagen Golf. Between January and the end of October, almost 500,000 Golf registrations were recorded.

Volkswagen presents the Polo BlueMotion, the most economical car in its class in Europe with an average consumption of 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres, at the Geneva International Motor Show. BlueMotion is not a single technology rather a whole range of innovations and refinements to help conserve energy and reduce fuel costs without removing the performance of cars. Efficiency starts at the very core of cars with their engines and gearboxes and innovative technologies such as TSI, TDI and DSG set the foundation for the BlueMotion car. Modified engine management software makes the engines run even more efficiently. The engine idle speed is reduced emitting less C02 and using less fuel. BlueMotion gearboxes have been reconfigured with longer ratios in higher gears for the most economical fuel consumption. Intelligent technology tells the driver when to change gear for optimum driving efficiency. The innovative start/stop system turns the engine off when the vehicle is idling in traffic and restarts it when its ready to move while the recuperation mechanism uses some energy usually lost during braking and deceleration to pass additional charge to the battery. The outside of this range is equally as crafted as the inside: from the low rolling resistant tyres which reduce road friction to the specifically designed aerodynamic styling. BlueMotion means less fuel consumption, lower emissions and a better driving experience representing the cleanest and most energy efficient cars in the Volkswagen range.

The collective agreement negotiated for Volkswagen AG defines key elements of a restructuring programme designed to align productivity, labour costs and capacity utilisation with the competition. For the six German plants, the abolition of the four-day week introduced in 1994 is the central item of the agreement. A rise in working time to a maximum of 33 hours a week for production and a maximum of 34 hours a week for administration is coupled to production commitments securing capacity utilisation and jobs for the coming years. In return for waiving a pay increase reflecting the increase in working hours, employees receive a lump-sum one-off payment to the company pension scheme. The collective agreement also introduces a new profit sharing system under which the profit-related bonuses could in future be significantly higher than in the past.

Volkswagen has unveiled the cleanest ever TDI engine. First test drives demonstrate the high potential of Volkswagen technologies, which consequently reduce nitrogen oxide. In the Jetta a new 2.0-litre common rail diesel engine with a nitrogen oxide reservoir catalytic converter is used. The first production run of the 'Clean TDI' with nitrogen oxide post-treatment system will be made during 2008 in the USA. The central theme of the entire concept is the reduction of nitrogen oxide. Engineers in Wolfsburg reached this goal through internal development of the engine and the use of new emission post-treatment technology. The result: up to 90% less nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx).

The Tiguan features technical innovations including the new 4MOTION all-wheel drive and the electromechanical steering system developed in cooperation with the Group's own components plant in Brunswick. 4MOTION is a permanent four-wheel drive system, offering great grip on the roughest roads and in the worst weather. It constantly monitors driving conditions and reacts to the slightest wheel slip, delivering extra traction to the wheels with the most grip. All this happens through control units linked to the car's dynamic sensors, engine management system and gearbox. At the heart of the system is an inter-axle differential. The electromechanical system is a speed-sensitive, electrical power-assisted steering system which is only activated when needed and uses no hydraulic components. Compared to hydraulic power steering, cars fitted with electromechanical power steering benefit from lower fuel consumption and new convenience and safety functions.

Four works agreements signed by the Group Board of Management and Group Works Council set out the "Volkswagen Way" and lay the foundation for the future corporate development of the Volkswagen brand. In essence these agreements aim to raise productivity while simultaneously securing jobs and ensuring profit sharing as well as introducing common standards for team work. With the help of the workforce, there is to be continuous improvement in work and process organisation in all areas of the company. Employees will enjoy direct benefits from the ensuing progress in productivity in the form of a performance-related bonus representing 10% of operating profits. Moreover, the plants themselves will largely benefit from the improvements in efficiency, as the resources thus generated will be invested in improving the working environment or in modernisation and competence-building measures.

Volkswagen sets out to build a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where vehicle production is scheduled to commence in early 2011. The supervisory board of Volkswagen AG approved plans and an investment volume of up to 1 billion USD (around 620 million euro). The Group's management board had previously pinpointed Chattanooga as the site for its new plant. The USA is an important part of Volkswagens volume strategy and they are now very resolutely accessing that market. The first stage of construction is designed to provide annual capacity for the complete production of 150,000 automobiles, including body-production, paint-shop and assembly operations. A cutting-edge modular production system at the plant will enable maximum flexibility. The first vehicle to be manufactured there will be a new midsize sedan tailored specifically to the US market. Volkswagen itself will employ a staff of approximately 2,000 at the site over the medium term, while additional jobs will be created in the supplier and logistics sectors.
